The Word of God is alive and active. Jesus is The Word of God. Jesus is alive and seated at the right hand of God. The Word does not return void.
I want to explain what this means. However, I do have to admit that I believe there are at least seven layers to every scripture. I might know one. I might know three. I admit I surely don’t know all seven plus. But, I can share what I do know.
The Word of God is living and powerful. This has several meanings on its own. The Word of God is Jesus. John tells us that in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Word is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is living. Our God is the living God. He’s known as the living God because He is alive. Death could not hold Jesus, because He is God. He was resurrected and ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He said that no one had ascended before Him. That is one reason why or how Jesus made The Way. Jesus said He is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. He is The Truth. He is alive. He is The Way. He is the gate that leads us to our Father. Prior to what He did, there was no way back to the Father. We were separated from Him because of our sin. We used to walk with Him in the garden. Jesus is The Way back to walking with Him again. So, the Word of God is living and powerful. Because the Word of God is Jesus. And Jesus is living and powerful because He is God, the Living God.
But also, the Word of God is living because it is alive. Not only is Jesus the logos, the Word, but also as we speak the word, it is alive and active. Sometimes the Word of God is referred to as the sword of the Spirit. This verse tells us that the Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword. Think of the sword of the Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that convicts us and brings to our remembrance everything that Jesus said. He is a witness of Jesus being God and what He did here on Earth. That sword, the Holy Spirit, pierces us.
Many times in scripture, we will read that when people hear the Word of God, they are “cut to the heart”. This verse says that the Word of God is a discerner of the thoughts and intents the heart. Several times in the New Testament we read that Jesus knew the thoughts of others. He is the Word and knows the thoughts of the heart. Our Father knows the thoughts of the heart. The sword of the Spirit cuts to the heart. You see, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. And when we hear the Word of God, the sword pierces us and we are convicted. We know that our thoughts are sinful. And we know that our actions are sinful. This is why a lot of people refuse to hear the Word of God. Because they don’t want to face it. They like living in their sin and they don’t want to be convicted of it.
