Worship

We are diving into music.  This is going to be an ongoing series as we’d really like to dig deep into the good side and bad side of music.  We plan on completing TONS of research and placing all the information together into a documentary.  We believe the best way to accomplish this is to investigate and discuss one topic at a time.  We can easily create blog posts and then put them all together into a video format or book format later.  To start, we want to discuss the very first instances of singing mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Job.  The Scripture reference is Job 38:6-7.  The LORD is speaking to Job about the creation of the earth.  We can see that in Job verses 3-5.

Job 38:3-5

Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

What a reminder for us to not be prideful or boastful or think we know anything, because His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.  We know nothing.  The LORD is like, “What do you know, Job?  Answer me.  Do you know these things?  I think not.”

Moving on to the verses for discussion… Job 38:6-7, the very next verses…

Job 38:6-7 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

First, we see that the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy.  Right off the bat, I can see that they are singing and shouting because the corner stone was laid.  Who is the cornerstone?  Jesus!  Jesus, the perfect cornerstone, is the Lamb slain from the FOUNDATION of the world.

Isaiah 28:17 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, A tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: He that believeth shall not make haste. Judgment also will I lay to the line, And righteousness to the plummet:

This passage reveals Isaiah prophesying of Jesus Christ who the LORD promised to send.

We also read in Ephesians 2:19-21 that Jesus is the corner stone.

Ephesians 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

And, one more confirming Isaiah:

1 Peter 2:4-7 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and lprecious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

The morning stars sang and the sons of God shouted for joy over the laying of the corner stone, which is Jesus.  This fits right into Revelation 13:8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Jesus is the lamb slain from the foundation of the world.  Read Job 38:6-7 again.

Job 38:6-7 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

The LORD is speaking of laying the foundation and the cornerstone.  Jesus is the cornerstone slain from the foundation of the world.

Now, I suppose we should show that Jesus is the Lamb, for anyone reading this that does not know that Jesus is the Lamb of God.  In doing so, we just can’t get any clearer than John 1:29.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Here we read that John called Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

Also, take a look at:

1 Peter 1:19-20 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.  Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

If we want to reference another Scripture verse, a good one is Revelation 14:1. Remember the verse from Isaiah we just mention above where Isaiah prophesied that the LORD would lay in Zion a corner stone, who we now know is Jesus?  Take a look at Revelation 14:1:

Revelation 14:1 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.

In this verse we see a Lamb (Jesus who is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world) standing on mount Sion (or Zion) where Isaiah said the corner stone would be lain.

Now that we have established that, we can, with certainty, say that the morning stars sang together and the sons of God shouted for joy because Jesus was laid as the cornerstone, being slain from the foundation of the world as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

We can probably safely assume (and I say that because we just don’t know everything) that the morning stars and sons of God are both the same entities – angelic beings.  It seems in this passage of Job, the first half and second half of the verses tie into each other and take on the same meaning.

For instance:

Job 38:6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

Talking only about the foundation being laid.

Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Speaking of the angelic beings singing and shouting.

Job 38:8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

Regards the sea being shut up when it broke forth.

Job 38:9 When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

Talking of the clouds being a garment and swaddling band.

I suppose it is possible that the morning stars are a different type of angelic being than “all the sons of God” and they are specifically singled out here being the ones who sing while “all the sons of God” shout with joy.

It’s interesting to note that Jesus is known also as the “Bright and Morning Star” as well as being the “Son of God”.

These morning stars, angelic created beings by God The Father may have heralded in the start of each new day.  Man was not created yet, nor was day and night established by the sun or moon on earth.  If the morning stars herald in the new day after the separation  from light and darkness, I suppose they would be heralding in a new day right then and there as Jesus is the Day and the Light, and Jesus being laid the corner stone would figuratively be ushering in a New Day!  The morning stars are singing of the glory preceding the Day in the dawn before the Son and sun appear.  The first Word spoke was “Let There Be Light”.  We know from John that the light separated the darkness and the darkness comprehended it not.  What a reason to celebrate!  Prior to this, the Earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the FACE of the deep.  You get a very dark chaotic vibe from this verse.  We don’t know what happened prior, but we know what God tells us.

Interestingly enough, Jesus returns with singing and shouting!

1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

A Shout and a Trump of God!  And singing…

Revelation 14:1-3 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.   And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:  And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

These songs seem to be songs of honor, glory, and victory, don’t they?  Victory Celebrations!!

This singing and shouting in victory was also done during the day of Ezra when the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid, again.

Ezra 3:11 And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the Lord; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.

The Word is sooo amazing!

There was also shouting and singing at the cross where victory actually, physically took place.

We see some alluding to this in Psalm 47:5-6.

Psalm 47:5-6 God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.  Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.

And in:

Isaiah 44:22-24  I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.  Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.  Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

Then, two-fold – once in Matthew and in Revelation.

In the account of Matthew at the cross, Jesus cries with a loud voice (a shout, if you will):

Matthew 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

Then, in Revelation 5, immediately after the death of Jesus at the cross, there is singing in heaven:

Revelation 5:6-10 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.  And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.  And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.  And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;  And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

I love that they sung a new song.  All throughout Scripture we are told to sing unto the Lord a new song.

Psalm 33:3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

Psalm 40:3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

Isaiah 42:10 Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.

This is a new song, a song of victory, worship, and glory.

I was recently ill and wasn’t able to use my voice.  I learned how much I took for granted being able to worship our God.  All I wanted to do was sing to Him.  I would cry out to the Father to please heal me faster so that I could sing to Him and praise His name.  I missed it so much and looonged to worship Him.

The LORD gave me a new song in the fall of 2020.  While trying to take a nap one day, I heard, “Write a Song.”  I said, “What do you mean write a song?” And then, the words came flooding into my heard along with the melody.  I had to quickly grab my phone and try to type it all down as fast as it was flooding into my mind.  It was amazing.  Upon doing an internet search, reading in forums, and browsing social media, I have discovered that I am not the only person who has received a new song from the LORD.  Many people have received a new song from the LORD!  Just like in Psalm 40:3 “And he hath put a new song in my mouth”!  Our Father is amazing!  I realize now that I was given the song after a series of events and blessings that surrounded my Father’s victory over the enemy for me.  I was pulled out of darkness and into His marvelous light.  Then, I was given a song of victory.

We’ve read the end.  Jesus Christ is Victorious.  We are Victorious through Jesus Christ.  Sing and Praise Him!  Magnify His Name!

Psalm 98:1 O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.
