Jesus on Earth

Knowing Jesus in His earthly ministry is to know Him as the Son of David, the Son of Abraham, the Son of Mary, and the Son of God made flesh.  These messages are put forth in the gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John.  He walked, He talked, He ate, He slept, He cried, He lived, and He died.  He was circumcised.  He kept and taught the Law.  He observed the Feast Days.  He obeyed all the Father’s laws and commandments perfectly.  He set the example for us to follow.

  1. He walked the perfect sinless life.

1 Peter 2:18-25

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.

19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

  1. He did His Father’s will.

John 15:10-11 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

Joy is a fruit of the Spirit.  We are to be joyful in all occasions, even in our suffering.

James 1:2-3 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

And we are to be joyful because of our living hope sitting at the right hand of God.  The tomb was empty.  Jesus Christ is risen.  He defeated death.

Jesus had joy in tribulation, just as were are to have.

Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

  1. Don’t think He doesn’t know your pain and suffering

Isaiah 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Also, physical pain. He endured a brutal death.

This is all so He could be a merciful high priest and just judge as well as mediator for mankind to our Father in Heaven.

1 John 2:1 “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:”

Hebrews 2

16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

  1. He always took breaks from His life and work to commune with the Father.  We talked about that a couple weeks ago, having Fellowship with Jesus.

Matthew 14:13 When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart*: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

Luke 5:16 And he withdrew* himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

  1. He was angry at times, especially toward hypocrites – those who claimed to religious but inwardly were ravening wolves.

Matthew 23

Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,

Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:

All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Matthew 7:15 Beware* of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Remember, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.  Jesus Christ and the Father are one.  Our Father did not mess around in the Old Testament and He isn’t messing around in the end.  Have  you read Revelation?  He will laugh at your calamity and He will not hear when you call upon Him.  Let your gods save you now, He says.  Get your act straight.  Our King has laws and commandments and we are to obey our King if are faithful to Him and His Kingdom.  He is returning as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah with a Sword in His Mouth. His light melts the wicked and blood will be as high as horses’ bridles as He tramples the wicked in the winepress.  God loves us and He wishes for none of us to perish.  Not one.  He wants us to turn, turn, turn from our wicked ways.  He is long suffering.  He puts up with us for a LONG period of time, patiently waiting for us to come to repentance.

Patience is another fruit of the spirit.

He was also angry at how we treated others.  Robbers, thieves, oppression of the poor

John 2:13-17 13 And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: 15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; 16 And said unto them that sold doves,Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.

  1. He felt sorrow and compassion

John 11

32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.  34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.  35 Jesus wept.  36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!  37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?  38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.   39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.  40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?  41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.  42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

Psalm 116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

He showed compassion many times.

Matthew 9:36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

Matthew 14:14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

Matthew 15:32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

Matthew 20

30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.  31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.  32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?  33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.  34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

  1. He was frustrated at the lack of faith we have

Matthew 17

14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.  16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.  17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.  18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.  19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?  20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Mark 4:35-41

35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.  36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.  37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.  38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?  39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.  40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?  41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

  1. Agony

Jesus sweat blood and tears in the Garden of Gethsemane. He prayed in agony and He sweat blood and tears as He prayed. Although He knew what was to come, He was in obedience to His Father in Heaven for the joy ahead of Him.

Luke 22:41-44 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down*, and prayed, 42 Saying,Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.  43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.  44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

  1. Empathy Toward Others

Jesus never demonstrated feeling sorry for Himself.  He wasn’t shown moping around saying, “Woe is me”.  He didn’t gripe about His betrayers.  He didn’t gripe about people using Him for His food and other miracles, which may have just been entertainment for some.  He didn’t gripe about His time in the wilderness when the devil tempted Him.  Jesus was always concerned about the physical and emotional suffering of others.

  1. Forgiveness – even in betrayal

After Jesus’ arrest, His disciples had deserted Him at His darkest hour, even though they all confessed they would never do so earlier at dinner.  When Jesus rose from the dead, He came to all of them and showed grace to each one of them.

John 21

14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.  15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter,Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him,Feed my lambs. 16 He saith to him again the second time,Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him,Feed my sheep.  17 He saith unto him the third time,Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him,Feed my sheep.

Jesus wanted us to be perfect and Holy as our Father in Heaven is Holy.  Vengeance is not ours.  It gives the devil a foothold.

Matthew 5

38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

On the cross, He prayed for those who suffered Him.

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Jesus walked that out perfectly, forgiving.

Matthew 6:14-15 says:

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly. Father will also forgive you. But if you don’t forgive men their. trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Proverbs 25:21-23

21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.

Romans 12:19-21

19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

You have to leave room for God to do what He deems fit.  He is the righteous judge and will cast judgment.  When you do it, you are trying to take the place of God and you are opening the door to evil.

Jesus was probably disappointed a lot, but we are His creation.  He knows why we are the way we are.  First the fall in the garden, then the Watchers came down and corrupted our genetic make-up and taught us all kinds of bad things.

Remember, we are His bride. He is our bridegroom.  He paid the dowry price for His bride on the cross and the Father accepted the payment.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Some questions we have thought about are:

Did Jesus remember what it was like to be immortal?

When did He get his mission set?  Did he always know from the time He was born?  Or, did He get it through prayer?  Or, did He get it when the Holy Spirit came upon him at his baptism with John?

It seems Jesus might not want us to remember him in his earthly form; hence why we are never given a date of his birth – so we can’t celebrate Jesus in the flesh.  We are to celebrate Jesus in the Spirit.  He defeated the works of the devil.  He defeated death.  He reconciled us back to the The Father.  He made us partakers of the divine inheritance where we will get new bodies.

2 Corinthisna 5

16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

After Jesus was resurrected, Paul stated we are to know Christ no more after the flesh, but he tells us a mystery concerning Christ and the church.

Ephesians 3

4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.

Colossians 1

25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

Romans 16

24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

No one in Christ is known as a Jew or Gentile.  We no longer know Jesus as King of the Jews.  He is the head of the body of Christ, the head of the church, seated at the right hand of the Father ruling and reigning now.  The risen Lord.  Our savior.

Ephesians 5

29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Galatians 1

11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.

12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:51-53

51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

We need not worry about what Jesus was like as an infant, a child, a teenager.  Concentrating on that part of His life leads to an inferior knowledge of how are to know Christ today.  We don’t celebrate His birth.  We don’t celebrate His death.  We celebrate His resurrection.  We celebrate the Empty Tomb.  Jesus Is Our Living Hope. This is how we are to know Chris today.  This is the mystery and revelation spoken of by Paul from Jesus Christ.
