grieve holy spirit

Part 9 of our Holy Spirit series focuses on grieving the Holy Spirit. We believe this will be an 18-Part Series in which you’ll discover who The Holy Spirit is and what He does. Many attributes are given to The Holy Spirit throughout Scripture. He is not a force. He is a person. He is a member of the Trinity, a part of YHWH. He is referred to as a “he”. In Parts 1-8 of this series, we featured His part in creating, recreating, convicting, teaching, bringing us peace through hope, witnessing Jesus as God in the flesh, creating a clean heart,, and connecting the church, and dwelling inside you.   Now, let’s look at how He grieves.

Isaiah 63

I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord,
    the praises of the Lord,
according to all that the Lord has granted us,
    and the great goodness to the house of Israel
that he has granted them according to his compassion,
    according to the abundance of his steadfast love.
For he said, “Surely they are my people,
    children who will not deal falsely.”
    And he became their Savior.
In all their affliction he was afflicted,[c]
    and the angel of his presence saved them;
in his love and in his pity he redeemed them;
    he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

10 But they rebelled
    and grieved his Holy Spirit;
therefore he turned to be their enemy,
    and himself fought against them.

We read here in Isaiah 63, that when we rebel against The Lord, which is disobeying his laws and commandments and inviting sin into our lives, that the Holy Spirit is grieved.  Therefore, He becomes your enemy and fights against you.  Who wants that!  Remember, a friend of the world is an enemy of God.

Ephesians 4

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil.

28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

We are warned again in Ephesians 4 to not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom we are sealed for the day of redemption.  Trust me, we do not want to miss that seal!  Can you imagine standing before the Most High God and giving answer for why you grieved His Holy Spirit that dwells inside of you?  When you do that, you literally kick Him out of His own house!!  That seriously can’t be good.

We must take note that when we decide to sin or when we unknowingly sin, we have grieved the Holy Spirit of God.  Therefore, we must repent, asking forgiveness in the name of Jesus Christ so we can be reconciled back to The Father and be sealed for the day of redemption.
